Plastic Extrusion Bender


A manufacturer of plastic extrusions came to us for assistance in designing an automated machine that could bend the extrusions to a specific radius without marring the surface or wrinkling any of the extrusion features. The plastic needed to be heated to nearly 400 F just before bending, then carefully cooled after the bending process.

A prototype machine that featured an integrated heating system, motorized drive for completing the bend, and a cooling system was conceived and built. Thermal calculations were completed to support the design. This provided the client with a deep theoretical understanding of the process and a tool to use in modifying the equipment for different shapes and thicknesses of plastic.

All mechanical, thermal and control aspects of the machine were designed and rendered in SolidWorks. Prototype parts production and assembly were carried out under our supervision.
